Rathnelly
Rathnelly, also known as The Republic of Rathnelly, is a charming upscale neighbourhood with a heritage unlike any other community in Toronto. Tucked away north of Dupont Street, south of Poplar Plains Crescent, and between Avenue Road to the east to Poplar Plains Road on the west, Rathnelly is a relatively small enclave of just 250 homes. However, what Rathnelly lacks in size, it more than makes up for with its extraordinary homes and atmosphere.
The History of Rathnelly
Originally developed as a middle-class neighbourhood, Rathnelly’s first homes were built in the early 1900s. However, in the 1960s, the neighbourhood was almost demolished entirely as a result of the City’s approved plans for the Spadina Expressway.
Fighting back, Rathnelly’s residents announced their community was succeeding from Canada altogether – declaring itself an independent nation in 1967. Maintaining a strong community spirit, residents were able to eventually save their homes as demolition plans were dropped in 1971.
Living in Rathnelly
Similar to neighbouring Summerhill and South Hill, it is often a first choice for upper-income families as a result of the community’s peaceful ambience, comfortable homes, and proximity to top public and private schools.
That said, some retirees and downsizers also call Rathnelly home as well. As a primarily residential enclave, Rathnelly has a relaxed suburban feel. However, residents don’t need to venture far for fantastic shopping, dining, and outdoor immersion.
Housing Stock in Rathnelly
While not the most diverse selection of homes, Rathnelly boasts a strong volume of gorgeous heritage properties. In addition to traditional Victorian homes, there are a number of properties in the definitively Toronto Bay-and-Gable architectural style.
While maintaining their historic charms, many of the local homes have been tastefully updated to reflect contemporary design tastes.
